Home checklist: are you energy efficient?

 

We all want to be as energy efficient as possible. It saves us having to pay costly gas and electricity bills, it means we are doing our bit for the environment; it even improves national security and enhances our overall quality of life. There are no negatives when it comes to saving energy so here at Fischer Energy we have created a comprehensive and easy to follow home checklist, with a few tips and advice to keep your energy use down.

  • Have you replaced your light bulbs with energy saving LED bulbs? Fantastically efficient, you could save over £200 a year on electricity.

 

  • Check the thermostat Many people have their dials turned up too high. Reduce by just 1⁰c and you can deduct £90 from your annual heating costs.

 

  • Draw the night in Simple yet effective, drawing the curtains at dusk will prevent heat from escaping through the windows and keep your home nice and cosy without having to turn up the heating.

 

  • Fix that leak If you haven’t got round to tightening that dripping tap in the bathroom, now is the time to do it. In just one week you may be wasting enough hot water to fill half a bath!

 

  • Dump the Dryer or be as sparing as possible with your use of the tumble dryer and you’ll be amazed at the savings you can make. Try investing in some practical tumble dryer balls to reduce pricey drying times.

 

  • Wash clothes at 30⁰c Use a third less electricity by turning your washing machine water temperature down to 30⁰c and always wash full loads.

 

  • Fridge Freezers Put a note in your diary to defrost these appliances and they will run more efficiently.

 

  • Keep it shut Avoid the temptation of needlessly opening the oven door when cooking. You lose loads of heat every time you do, and the oven then uses more energy to replace it.

 

  • Tea for 2? When boiling the kettle for a nice cuppa, get into the habit of using just the right amount of water. On average UK households boil 1500 kettles a year – a huge amount of energy wasted when over-filled.

 

  • Shower or a long hot soak? Showers are far more energy efficient that baths and if you can cut your showering-time from twenty to ten minutes you could reduce hot water costs by 25%

 

  • Hot water tank If you have one, it’s certainly worth checking to see if it’s well-insulated. Tank jackets start from under £10 and can cut heat loss by up to 75%. Make sure you have a minimum thickness of 75mm for one of the cheapest and easiest D-I-Y methods in saving energy.

 

  • Don’t standby Many of us our guilty of leaving our appliances on standby over-night. With the average UK home having three televisions, not to mention games consoles, PC’s and other energy guzzling gadgets, this one-second job can save £80 annually in electricity.

 

  • Are you insulated? Having a well-insulated home is one of the most effective ways in keeping energy efficient. Cavity wall insulation can save you up to £270 a year. Loft insulation can earn you an approximate saving of £175 and replacing single-glazed windows with B-rated double-glazing can put £165 back into the coffers. These methods will require an initial investment but you will, realistically, see a return on this in the first year.

 

  • Check your boiler It might seem a daunting and costly solution but an inefficient boiler can increase your bills by up to £200. As a long-term solution it really will make a difference. Boilers are rated on a scale of A to G, so if yours is lagging at the bottom of this consider investing in a new model. It’s also an effective way to reduce your household carbon emissions.

 

  • Monitor your consumption Taking our energy for granted is an easy thing to do, but with a monitor displaying our use and subsequent cost it becomes an effective energy saving eye-opener. Research reckons an average family can save £110 a year because of this.

 

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to improve our energy efficiency. Some of the most effective measures take the least amount of time and with a few simple adjustments to our habits we can significantly bring down our demand for energy. We get to save money on our bills and take comfort in the fact that we are contributing positively to the future of our environment.
